Naturalisation
What does it mean?
To obtain British citizenship by naturalization, individuals generally need to be at least 18 years old, meet a residency requirement (usually five years, with a three-year requirement for spouses of British citizens), prove good character, demonstrate sufficient knowledge of life in the UK (through the "Life in the UK" test), and demonstrate adequate English language skills.
Detailed Requirements:
- Age: Applicants must be 18 years old or older.
- Residency: A period of lawful residence in the UK is required, typically five years. Spouses or civil partners of British citizens may have a shorter residency requirement of three years.
- Good Character: Applicants must demonstrate they are of good character, meaning they have not been convicted of serious crimes or have any issues with debts, taxes, or immigration.
- Life in the UK Test: Applicants must pass the "Life in the UK" test, which assesses their knowledge of British life and culture.
- English Language: Applicants must demonstrate sufficient knowledge of English, Welsh, or Scottish Gaelic.
- Intent to Continue Living in the UK: Applicants must demonstrate an intention to continue living in the UK.
Settled Status: Applicants typically need to have indefinite leave to remain (ILR) or settled status.
- Oath of Allegiance: Applicants are required to take an oath of allegiance to His Majesty the King at a formal citizenship ceremony.
Additional Considerations:
- Children: Children born in the UK can automatically become British citizens if at least one parent is a British citizen or settled in the UK.
- EU Settlement Scheme: Individuals with pre-settled or settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme may be eligible for citizenship.
- Naturalization: Naturalization is the process by which a non-citizen becomes a British citizen.
- British Passport: British citizens can apply for a British passport.
- How much it costs: It costs £1,735 to apply (this includes the £130 citizenship ceremony fee).
- You’ll also need to have your biometric information (fingerprints and a photo) taken - there’s no fee for this. You’ll be told how to do this after you’ve applied.
